This ESRC funded project, the Talk Factory, is aiming at scaffolding engagement in the process of scientific argumentation. We are designing and developing software to support student talk, using real time graphical representation of specially developed talk rules in a classroom setting.

The project is in its third phase, �classroom testing.�

Marilena Petrou described the Talk Factory project as part of the CALRG argumentation symposium. Funded by ESRC. Argumentation is part of the science education curriculum ... but evidence that there are not the opportunities to engage with it for learners in classroom. Talk Factory links to ways to encourage Exploratory Talk - working with a teaching programme that guides knowledge of science but also the language to discuss science. The software itself offers a simple way for teachers to register their view of progress and a planning tool for student groups that feed in to a collated view. The early view is that this will need to be used fairly broadly to make a difference.
