a course in it’s second presentation that walks new students through different learning systems, encouraging students to communicate with one another before a major collaborative activity half way through the course. The course team will share with you why they took the approach to communications and collaboration that they did; how successful it has been and what their aspirations are for the future.

padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Online collaborative project aiming to replicate dynamics of summer school group work. Small teams working without tutor intervention.

Presented to populations of about 3000 students with 150 tutors. Almost every student team completed the work and produced a report which is unusual.  Quality of reports high

Students and ALs mostly enthusiastic - wide ranging gains reported and students enjoyed it.

Team members meet online and agree start and finish dates.  Each student thinks of a care need they want info about and search for the info online.  They then submit reviews of two websites using a proforma.  They review each other's sites (4 each). Each student writes a section of a structured team report, team submits report, then student writes their own individual essay.

They get marks for their individual contribution and various other aspects of the collaborative work.

Work of each [removed][removed] team member is displayed to whole [removed][removed] team. Each team has its own forum.

Time targets are closely managed and very visible - students cannot complete tasks for team mates.

Quite an eye opener to students when they see comments from other students on their reviews.  They learn about quality of info, trust, power, access etc.

Nice grid showing how tutors can monitor progress of students dynamically.

Students develop skills in independent inquiry, team working in an online environment and information literacy skills.
